How to Spot Hail Damage on Your Colorado Roof (Photo Guide)

Hail damage is harder to spot from the ground than most Colorado homeowners realize. The classic Front Range pattern is bruising: a circular spot on the shingle where the granules are knocked off and the asphalt mat is fractured underneath. From the curb the roof looks fine. From the roof, the damage is obvious. This guide walks through what hail damage actually looks like on each component of a typical Colorado asphalt roof, what to photograph, and how to distinguish real hail damage from wear, age, and manufacturing defects that carriers do not pay for.

The four damage zones to inspect after a hail event

Hail does not strike a roof uniformly. The damage pattern follows the storm's direction and the slope's exposure. Inspect four zones systematically, in this order, so nothing is missed and the photo record covers the full envelope of the claim.

  • Roof slopes (the field): bruising, granule loss, mat fractures.
  • Accessory metal: vent collars, pipe boots, ridge caps, roof-mounted HVAC, satellite dishes.
  • Soft metal trim and gutters: dents, dings, spatter marks on painted surfaces.
  • Window screens, vinyl siding, AC fins, and outdoor furniture: secondary indicators that confirm the storm size.

What hail damage looks like on the roof field (slopes)

On architectural asphalt shingles, the damage signature is a circular bruise where the impact dislodged granules and fractured the asphalt mat underneath. Press a thumbnail into the bruise; on a real hail strike, the mat will feel soft or springy compared to undamaged shingle. Old wear and manufacturing defects feel hard and brittle.

On three-tab shingles (less common on newer Colorado roofs), the damage signature is similar but the shingle is more likely to fracture all the way through. On Class 4 impact-resistant shingles, hail still leaves bruise patterns but is much less likely to fracture the mat; carriers may still pay replacement on cosmetic damage if the policy does not exclude it.

What you should NOT see if the damage is real hail: linear scuff marks (those are tree branches or foot traffic), uniform granule loss across the entire slope (that is age), or damage only on the underside of upturned tabs (that is wind, not hail).

Accessory metal: where carriers verify the storm size

Field adjusters look at accessory metal more carefully than the field shingles because dents and dings on soft metal are unambiguous evidence of impact. Walk and photograph: roof-mounted HVAC housings, gas-fired appliance chimneys, B-vent collars, plumbing vent pipe boots, ridge cap accessory metal, skylight flashing, and any rooftop-mounted satellite or solar hardware.

Dents on accessory metal are the single highest-leverage photo for an insurance claim. They establish hail size, hail direction, and timing in one image. A bruise on a shingle could be old; a fresh dent on a painted soft-metal vent cap is unambiguous.

Soft metal trim, gutters, and downspouts

Gutters and downspouts are aluminum, which dents on direct hail impact and shows the dent pattern long after the storm. Look for round impressions on the front of the gutter (facing the sky), dents on the top edges, and spatter marks where granules from the field shingles have washed down and stained the painted surface. Granule accumulation in the gutter trough also indicates field damage; scoop a handful and photograph the volume.

Soft-metal trim around windows, garage doors, and roof transitions shows hail dents the same way gutters do. Photograph the south- and west-facing surfaces first (where storm direction typically hits hardest in Colorado) and work around the perimeter.

Secondary indicators that confirm the storm size

If the question is whether the storm produced 1-inch hail or 1.5-inch hail (which can be the difference between repair and replacement scope on some policies), secondary indicators close the gap. Check: window screens (round impressions on the mesh), vinyl siding (cracks or splits at impact points), outdoor furniture (dent patterns on metal surfaces, splits on plastic), AC condenser fins (bent fins on the upward-facing side), and outdoor vegetation (snapped twigs and shredded leaves visible the morning after).

Pair these observations with the NOAA Storm Events Database record for your zip code on the loss date. NOAA hail size and arrival time are the federal record carriers rely on. If your observations match NOAA, the file is strong; if they exceed NOAA (you saw 2-inch hail and NOAA recorded 1-inch in your zip code), document with date-stamped photos because the claim may need that record.

How to distinguish hail damage from wear, age, and manufacturing defects

Insurance pays for storm-caused damage, not aging. A 22-year-old three-tab roof with widespread granule loss and exposed asphalt mat across every slope is at end-of-useful-life regardless of hail. A roof with localized bruising on the south and west slopes that matches a recent NOAA storm record is claim territory.

  • Uniform granule loss across all slopes: age, not hail.
  • Granule loss only on south- and west-facing slopes: probably age + UV, not hail.
  • Bruising in a random pattern on multiple slopes: hail. Document with chalk-circled test squares slope by slope.
  • Curled shingle edges: thermal cycling and age, not hail.
  • Cracked shingles in a straight line across multiple courses: foot traffic or thermal stress, not hail.
  • Black or brown streaks: algae or organic growth, not hail and not covered.
  • Manufacturer defect (blistering, premature granule release on a young roof): potentially manufacturer warranty, not insurance.

Photo method for your file

If you are inspecting from the ground before your contractor and adjuster get to the roof, the photo method that matters most is documentation of accessory metal, gutters, and secondary indicators. Date-stamp every photo (set your device clock correctly). Wide shots first, then close-ups with a coin, tape measure, or other size reference next to the dent or bruise. Pull the NOAA Storm Events record for your zip code on the loss date and save it to the same file. Your contractor will take the slope-by-slope test squares on the roof; your ground-level documentation supports their work.

When to call a roofer and when not to

Call after any documented hail event of 1-inch hail or larger in your zip code per NOAA, after any wind event above 50 mph in your zip code, after any visible dents on gutters or accessory metal, or after a storm where neighbors are reporting damage. Do not call after light pea-sized or marble-sized hail; light hail rarely causes functional damage and a denied claim still becomes part of your loss history.
