Best Time of Year to Paint a Colorado Home
The Colorado painting season is mid-April through October on the Front Range, with overnight lows above 40 F and dry weather for at least 24 hours after application. Surface temperature, not air temperature, controls whether the film cures correctly.
Why shoulder seasons can backfire
Late October and early November are tempting, but cold-night curing failures are a real risk. Overnight lows below 40 F can prevent proper coalescence in 100 percent acrylic films, leaving a soft, easily damaged surface that fails the next freeze-thaw cycle. We push hard to finish by mid-October on most projects.
Spring brings the opposite risk: late freezes, hailstorms (Colorado hail season runs roughly April 15 through September 15, peaking in mid-June), and chinook events that drop humidity into the single digits and cause flash-drying. Watch the 5-day forecast; a mid-April day that is 65 F at noon may be 28 F at 3 a.m.
Surface temperature, not air temperature
South-facing siding at 130 F is too hot for most paints. The film flash-dries on contact, leaving brush marks, lap marks, and poor adhesion. Reputable contractors work the elevations in shade rotation: north and east in the morning, south and west in the late afternoon.
