Roofing and Paint Warranties in Colorado: A Line-by-Line Reading
Most warranty disappointments in Colorado come from reading the marketing brochure instead of the warranty document. This guide walks through the three layers of coverage, the specific tier names from GAF, Owens Corning, and CertainTeed, the labor exclusions in Sherwin-Williams, Benjamin Moore, Behr, and PPG paint warranties, and the registration and transfer rules that decide whether your warranty pays a claim or denies it.
The three layers every Colorado homeowner should understand
A complete roof or paint job in Colorado carries up to three separate warranties. The manufacturer material warranty covers the product against defects. The workmanship warranty covers installation labor. The system or enhanced warranty bundles both, and only applies when a certified contractor installs a defined package of components from one manufacturer.
Each layer has different lengths, exclusions, and claim procedures. A homeowner who calls the manufacturer about a leak around a vent will be told the leak is workmanship. A homeowner who calls the contractor about granule loss after seven years will be told that is a manufacturer matter. Understanding which document covers which failure prevents months of finger pointing.
GAF tiers as they read on the certificate
GAF asphalt shingles carry a base limited warranty that covers the shingle against manufacturing defects, with a prorated schedule that reduces payout each year after roughly the tenth year. The lifetime designation applies only to the original owner and only when the homeowner registers the roof.
- System Plus requires GAF Pro or higher certification and adds non-prorated coverage on the shingles for the first fifty years and ten-year workmanship coverage from GAF on installer error.
- Silver Pledge adds twenty-five-year workmanship coverage and requires Master Elite certification.
- Golden Pledge requires Master Elite certification, includes fifty-year non-prorated material coverage and twenty-five-year workmanship coverage backed by GAF directly, and requires a tear-off and replacement of multiple accessory components.
Owens Corning tiers and the Platinum Protection language
Owens Corning Duration shingles include a TRU PROtection period during which the warranty is non-prorated. After that period, coverage prorates by year. The two upgraded warranties available through Preferred and Platinum Preferred contractors extend the non-prorated period and add labor coverage.
- Preferred Protection extends non-prorated material coverage and adds limited labor reimbursement on installer-related failures.
- Platinum Protection requires Platinum Preferred contractor status, extends both material and workmanship coverage, and is transferable once within the first ten years without reducing terms.
- Owens Corning algae resistance coverage on AR-rated shingles is typically ten years and is separate from the main shingle defect coverage.
CertainTeed SureStart and the SELECT ShingleMaster program
CertainTeed shingles carry a base SureStart period of non-prorated coverage. Three-Star, Four-Star, and Five-Star upgraded warranties are issued through Quality Master, ShingleMaster, and SELECT ShingleMaster contractors and require installation of a defined CertainTeed Integrity Roof System.
- Three-Star adds extended SureStart and limited workmanship coverage.
- Four-Star adds longer non-prorated coverage and a longer workmanship term.
- Five-Star is available only through SELECT ShingleMaster credentialed contractors and provides the longest non-prorated material and workmanship terms CertainTeed offers.
What manufacturer warranties typically exclude
Reading the exclusions section first saves time. The categories below appear in some form across all three major asphalt brands.
- Hail damage above a defined size, typically anything beyond cosmetic granule displacement on standard three-tab and architectural shingles.
- Wind damage above the rated wind speed when accessory components were not installed or were installed without enhanced fastening.
- Damage from inadequate ventilation. Failure to meet 1 to 150 net free area without a vapor retarder, or 1 to 300 with one, voids most coverage.
- Algae and discoloration outside the separate algae resistance period.
- Damage caused by walking on the roof, mechanical equipment, satellite dish installation, or pressure washing.
- Acts of God on standard shingles. Class 4 impact-rated shingles add limited hail coverage but still exclude damage above defined sizes.
Workmanship coverage from a Colorado contractor
Workmanship warranties from a contractor cover installation defects. In Colorado, workmanship windows from local roofers commonly run two to ten years on roofing and one to three years on exterior paint. The specific length matters less than the entity standing behind it. A workmanship warranty from a storm-chasing operation that closes its Colorado office in eighteen months has no practical value in year four when a flashing leak appears.
Senate Bill 38 codifies the homeowner-contractor relationship and prohibits paying or rebating an insurance deductible. It does not extend a contractor's workmanship warranty. The warranty length and what it covers is set in the contract you sign.
Paint manufacturer warranties and the labor exclusion
Sherwin-Williams Emerald, Duration, Resilience, and SuperPaint each carry a written limited warranty against peeling, blistering, and flaking caused by manufacturing defects. The same is true for Benjamin Moore Aura, Regal Select, and Ben, for Behr Marquee and Premium Plus, and for PPG Timeless and Manor Hall.
All four manufacturers explicitly exclude labor from warranty coverage. The remedy under a manufacturer paint warranty is replacement paint, not the cost of repainting. The contractor's written workmanship warranty is the practical warranty that covers the labor to repair a failed coating.
- Sherwin-Williams Emerald carries a lifetime limited warranty on the product, replacement only.
- Benjamin Moore Aura carries a lifetime limited warranty on the product, replacement only.
- Behr Marquee carries a lifetime limited warranty on the product, replacement only.
- PPG Timeless carries a lifetime limited warranty on the product, replacement only.
- Common exclusions across all four: failure on improperly prepared surfaces, application below the minimum surface temperature, application during high humidity or before predicted rain, application over incompatible coatings, fading on bright pigments outside the defined period, and substrate failure.
Registration, transfer, and the paperwork that decides claims
Most enhanced warranties require online registration within thirty to sixty days of installation. A roof installed without registration drops to the standard limited warranty regardless of which package the homeowner paid for. Keep the registration confirmation, the original installation invoice, the contractor certification number, and the photo documentation of accessory components installed.
Transferability rules vary. GAF Golden Pledge is transferable once within the first twenty years if the new owner submits a transfer fee and form within sixty days of closing. Owens Corning Platinum Protection is transferable once within the first ten years. CertainTeed Five-Star is transferable once within the first twenty years. Knowing the rule before listing the home prevents losing coverage at the closing table.
How a warranty claim actually proceeds in Colorado
A typical claim begins with the homeowner contacting the contractor first. The contractor inspects, identifies whether the failure is workmanship or material, and then either repairs under workmanship coverage or files the manufacturer claim on the homeowner's behalf. Manufacturer claims involve a sample submission, photo documentation, and often an on-site inspection by a manufacturer representative. Resolution timelines run from sixty days for clear material defects to nine months for contested claims involving ventilation or installation questions.
Document the failure with dated photos, save weather records around the failure event, and keep the original installation paperwork accessible. Claims denied for missing documentation are common and usually unrecoverable.
